Swallow Cottage Access Statement
Introduction. Having refurbished this building specifically with accessibility in mind from the outset, we have managed to incorporate many features that cannot usually be found in holiday accommodation.
Access from the roadis through a farm gate, which requires opening and closing. Although feasible, this requires leaving the car and would be awkward for a wheelchair user on their own.
Parking for Swallow Cottage is in its own area with space for several cars immediately next to the entrance with ample turning and unloading on a very gently sloping gravelled surface. Lighting operated by sensors lights this area when used at night.
Front door The front door has a 840mm (33’’) clear opening with a flush threshold, with the hall inside large enough for a wheelchair to turn in together with a storage area. Both the door to the kitchen / living area and the main bedroom also have 840 mm wide clear openings.
Accommodation is all on the ground floor, with one step down from the entrance hall into the kitchen / dining room. A ramp is kept nearby and placed in this position when required.
Kitchen / Living room has been provided with two worktop areas, allowing one to be at a lower level suitable for wheelchair users, with clear knee space underneath and a sink, microwave and hob. There is space for manoeuvring wheelchairs around this area
Main Bedroom at 4.1 x 5.3m is large enough to spend time during the day as well as manoeuvring and storing wheelchairs and having assistance. An extra bed can be installed upon request. It is connected to a walk en ensuite shower / wc specifically designed for disabled users, with grab rails, shower seat, special thermostatic shower and pull cord alarm ( signal in living room next door).
Secondary Bedrooms are on the ground floor, with 2 having ensuite shower rooms ( not large enough for a wheelchair and involve a step up into the shower cubicle) and 2 sharing the use of a bathroom / wc.
Garden is relatively flat with a lawn and pond, accessible from both the main bedroom and the large sliding doors to the kitchen / living room. The latter involves a small step.
Public Transport the closest railway station is at Kilgetty - 3.7miles, although the most convenient is Whitland due to frequency of service. There are no buses locally. |
