About Little Loveston History

We bought Little Loveston with outbuildings and 4 acres of land in 1993 from the Cresselly Estate. It was originally a farm and, although had not been worked for a long time, the buildings were being used to house farm animals.

In August 1993 we camped here for the summer to put in the boundary fence and then moved down permanently in May 94. We spent most of the next 3 to 4 years living in a caravan while making the house habitable, clearing back the vegetation and renovating the farm buildings.

First big tasks were putting in the septic tank, the services to all the buildings, planting 100’s of trees and making a carparking area. The fort in the playground came about because we needed to drain the field which was waterlogged.

We kept goats, geese, chickens and a flock of Jacobs sheep to keep the grass down.

Loveston Barn and Long Barn
The original longbarn was used as a dairy for milking cows. It was in good condition, we have kept all the walls, roof timbers and slates, together with the original openings. The main addition has been two chimneys for the woodburners.

Landsker House
Landsker House was used for storing feed upstairs and a cart downstairs. In one corner was a large cauldron for warming the mash to feed the horses. Again, we were able to keep all the stonework, slates and original openings.

The Old Farmhouse
1997 to 2000 was spent renovating the old farmhouse which was occupied until the 1940’s when our house was built.

Little Loveston was a fantastic lush wilderness when we arrived and in the process of landscaping, creating gardens for the cottages and planting, we have tried to retain much of the original character of the place.

Games Room, Pool and Sauna
We thought the pigsty would make a great games room

Then, in 2008, we dismantled the old caravan and began building the pool in its place – the field sloped more than we had anticipated and this made it into a perfectly sheltered spot. In 2009 we built the structure at the end of the pool to hold the solar panels and put the sauna in it.

Swallow Cottage
We have just finished refurbishing the last of the outbuildings with a special emphasis on making it suitable for wheelchair access
